The Queen of World Music stayed at Long Beach…
The London-born singer with Tamil roots visited Mauritius for a concert in May 2012 and stayed at Long Beach. Susheela Raman’s musical style is inspired by the cultures she encountered growing up in Australia. Her Indian origins and Anglo-Saxon culture are equally present in her music. Susheela Raman’s music is a subtle mix of Carnatic music and pop-rock.
Although her adoptive culture is very present in her music, the artist is very implicated in Indian Carnatic music. The mystical aspect of this music has fascinated Raman since childhood. She studied South Indian classical music which proved to be a great means of bringing her Tamil culture to life in Australia. Susheela still studies Carnatic music and uses traditional musical instruments when recording her albums.
Her music presents the mythical and magical sounds of India in a modern way. Her Mauritian concert in May was fully-booked weeks before the date, the Mauritian population is under this enchanting artists’ spell !
This, her first visit to Mauritius, was a revelation for the well-travelled artist ; she was seduced by the island’s beauty. The Long Beach team have wonderful memories of Susheela Raman’s visit ; a talented and modest artist.
