Fishing boat scuttled to the bottom of the eastern Mauritian sea floor

17 juillet 2015

Guests of Long Beach, Mauritius witnessed an old fishing boat being scuttled to the bottom of the sea floor off the east coast to build the foundation for an artificial reef.

Wreck divers are in for a real treat at Long Beach ! Last month, an exhausted fishing boat was scuttled to the bottom of the Mauritian sea floor off the east coast of the island. After decades spent scouting the Indian Ocean, the fishing boat left the Port-Louis harbour on June 9th for her final crossing. Her last mission : providing much-needed shelter to the Mauritian marine wildlife while protecting the island’s largest lagoon from erosion.

Boosting the Mauritius marine ecosystem

Although live corals still protect the lagoons of Mauritius, artificial reefs made of concrete, debris or old ships are regularly built to help take the pressure off natural reefs. Regardless of how they are built, the role of artificial reefs is to provide hard surfaces whereby algae and other invertebrates can create a welcoming habitat for a variety of marine animals. At the same time, artificial reefs become splendid diving sites teeming with life and serve as bountiful means of livelihood to local fishermen.

Wreck Diving and Watersports at Long Beach

The whole affair attracted quite a crowd of puzzled onlookers to the beach. They snapped priceless pictures as the tugboat relentlessly sprayed high pressure water onto the fishing boat to speed up her descent. But if you missed this event, you can still take a close look at the retired fishing boat and at the natural Mauritian coral reefs by snorkeling, diving or taking a glass-bottom boat trip during your stay at the 5 star resort Long Beach.
